Some of my fondest childhood memories are of standing on a chair at the counter, “helping” my mom bake. These five recipes are designed to recreate that magic, focusing on simple steps, fun hands-on tasks, and delicious results that will make your little baker beam with pride.

Ingredients

  • 1 – Cup – All-purpose flour

  • 1/2 – Cup – Granulated sugar

  • 1/4 – Cup – Unsalted butter – (softened)

  • 1 – – Large egg

  • 1 – tsp – Vanilla extract

  • 1/2 – tsp – Baking powder

  • 1/4 – tsp – Salt

  • 1/2 – Cup – Chocolate chips – (or sprinkles for fun!)

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until it’s light and fluffy. (A perfect job for little hands with a wooden spoon!)
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until just combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Gently fold in the chocolate chips or sprinkles.
  • Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are just lightly golden.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Embrace the Mess: Put down an old tablecloth or baking sheet to catch spills. The mess is part of the fun and easily cleaned up!
  • Little Chef Tasks: Perfect jobs for kids include pouring pre-measured ingredients, cracking eggs into a separate bowl (to check for shells), stirring, and of course, adding the mix-ins.
  • Get Creative: This dough is a blank canvas. Let them personalize it with M&Ms, dried fruit, or a pinch of cinnamon.
  • Patience is Key: The cookies will look soft in the middle when they come out. Letting them cool on the pan is what gives them the perfect, chewy texture.
